The Perfect Pairing: MCTs and CBD

Medium-chain triglycerides, or MCTs, have rapidly grown in popularity across the world in food, beverage, pharmaceutical and cosmetic product formulations. MCTs are rising with the trend toward natural and clean-label products and provide a seamless addition to bolster the health benefits of CBD and hemp-derived products as a carrier oil.

MCTs are composed of 6 to 12 carbons that are fatty-acid esters of glycerol. Their short length allows the human body to absorb the oil efficiently. MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract into the portal vein without requiring the modification that long-chain fatty acids do. MCTs also have health benefits backed by science and clinical research. Learn more about the health benefits of MCTs here

CBD, cannabidiol, is a chemical compound derived from the hemp plant, one of 113 cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Since the legalization of CBD with 0.3% of THC or less, the CBD industry continues to grow in the U.S. Consumers seek CBD to treat pain, soreness, fatigue, anxiety, stress and beyond.

For a consumer to absorb the benefits of CBD, a carrier oil is required. When CBD combines with MCT oil, it directly binds with the fat molecules that the human body is accustomed to processing, bolstering CBD’s bioavailability.

MCT also helps increase the potency and shelf life of CBD products. It’s nearly impossible to precisely measure CBD potency for full spectrum and broad spectrum products that may contain small amounts of other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. CBD isolate is the only type of CBD that is pure because this ingredient is a single-molecule. When a consumer selects a full or broad spectrum CBD product, MCTs ensure proper dosage by allowing the CBD to distribute evenly in the oil. MCTs as a carrier oil also increases the shelf life of CBD products, as fats oxidize at a slower rate.

MCT oil is also an ideal carrier oil for CBD because it contributes to the CBD product’s health benefits and is flavorless, odorless and smooth. It is naturally anti-fungal, antibacterial and contains the highest concentrations of fat-soluble compounds that the human body can efficiently process. As MCT has notoriety, consumers are more likely to select CBD products with MCTs. MCTs provide an ideal solution for manufacturers looking to develop a clean-label, all-natural CBD product to introduce to the market.
